“And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul”
~ John Muir

Miss L, I’d gladly trek through a forest with you any day.  Inquisitive, fearless, you have the soul of an explorer.  I loved how it was so easy for you to just BE in the forest, enjoying the quiet (and not so quiet) moments given to you.

Our daring adventurer loves a few things:

  • She loves running & swimming
  • Popular over smart?  No way – she’ll take brains, thank you.
  • She’s proudest of her running accomplishments and academic achievements
  • The adventurer at heart that she is, her biggest dream is to live a full life

My favorite answer from her questionnaire?  The GREATEST thing about her is that she is accepting of all & kind.  Quite true, young lady – extremely accepting with a gentle smile and kind eyes.  That, girl, is a gift – be proud of it!

Random things you need to know about her:

If Miss L were invisible for a day, watch out – she would tickle people!  Her mom can easily make her happy when she’s sad.  She’d rather fight a giant octopus than a fire breathing dragon (smart choice, just watch out for the ink!)  Lastly, if she could go anywhere for vacation, she’d love to go to Hawaii.  (Take me with you, L!!!)

You get lucky, on occasion, meeting someone that inspires & entertains you.

Someone that you just can’t get enough of because they are that amazing.  Like Miss C.  Holy cow.  This kid is GOING places and I can’t wait to see how far she goes.  (Psssssst, Broadway, watch out for this one!!!)

A smidge about this future Broadway star:

  • no, seriously, she wants to be on Broadway…
  • would rather be smart than popular
  • her friends make her happy whenever she’s down
  • America Singer, a character from The Selection series, is her fave character because (and I love this) she’s BRAVE, strong-minded, and she’d do anything for her family

Miss C tells me that the GREATEST thing about her is “my happy energy I bring with me.”  Indeed, C, indeed.  You were positively radiant and joyful when we were together!

Random things you need to know about her:

Miss C is Team Clumsy Ninja (because she says she’s already clumsy).  She would use Doctor Strange’s powers of freezing time to fight a dragon, which, fyi, would be her choice of superhero powers.  Favorite vacation spot is the beach (my kind o’ girl!)  Oh, and finally, she’d love to learn a standing back tuck.  Whew!

I started the B-Tribe because I wanted tweens to realize that it is A-Ok to be themselves.  Even more than that, it’s positively BRILLIANT to own who you are & not be afraid of what others might say.  Enter Miss F…

This girl.  I am SO freaking excited that she’s one of my very first B-Tribe members.  Smart, beautiful, funny – and watch out for her fast pitch.  Like one of her shirts states: “There’s nothing soft about this girl.”

A smidge about her:

  • dreams of being a scientist
  • would rather be smart than popular
  • is crazy proud of her family
  • loves softball (obviously), the flute & violin

My favorite answer from the questionnaire I sent?  That the GREATEST thing about her is her “talent to achieve whatever I try.”

BOOM!

*mic drop*

And THAT is what being part of the B-Tribe is all about….

Random things you need to know about her:

Miss F is Team Clumsy Ninja (vs amnesiac wizard).  She’d rather fight a dragon than a giant octopus (umm…  dragons breathe FIRE, yikes!)  If given the choice of superhero powers, she’d choose speed (picturing her dressed up as the Flash now…)  Last but not least, she’d rather freeze time over being able to fly.  (Myself, I’m pretty torn…  though time…  We could all be like Doctor Strange!)

Dear B-Tribe,

Oh man.  Your age is rough, right?  I know it!  I’ve been there, done that, and that t-shirt got worn out!  Parents don’t listen.  “Friends” try to persuade you to do stuff you don’t.want.to.do.  Your body is changing and forget about your emotions.  CRAZY.  It’s enough to drive anyone over the edge.

But guess what??  You, my friend, have a place.  A person.  A go-to-spot.

Within the B-Tribe, you are perfectly safe to be *gasp* YOU.

Yes, I said it – be YOU.  The real you.  The one that you hesitate to share with the world.  But darn it – share it with me.  With the rest of the B-Tribe.  Because we GET.IT.  We totally understand.  And ya know what?  We solemnly swear to be just as real with you.  Why?  Because it IS AMAZING to be YOU.  To be true to yourself!

By now, you know what it means to be part of the B-Tribe.

We challenge you to be BRAVE.  March to the beat of a different drummer.  Be daring, bold, confident.  Figure out who you are and stick with it.  Don’t let anyone else tear you down.

Good ol’ Henry knew what it was all about.  Take his advice to heart.  LIVE your life.  Live it BOLDLY.  Be proud of who you are.  And know, deep down, how freaking AMAZING you are as a person.

Be BRAVE

B – BOLD

R – REAL

A – AUTHENTIC

V – VIBRANT

E – EMPOWERED

How will you be BRAVE?  Let me and the rest of the Tribe know down in the comments.  We want to hear what you have to say!

Until next time, gang.

I remember my little sister in a hot pink romper, toddling around our front yard.  She was not even two at the time and I was chasing after her, precious camera in hand.  She wasn’t an easy subject for me, but I was about 10 years old and determined.  Occasionally, I could get her to stop and look at me.  Most of the time, though, it was shots like this:

Little Sis, Circa 1980s

The old Kodak Instamatic was everything to me back then – a world of possibilities within one roll of film.  I captured as much as I could and looked forward to seeing the results in print after each roll was done.  My parents indulged me and willingly sat as my subjects.  Sometimes with the neighbor’s puppy, occasionally with our orange tabby (seen rolling in the grass, top right.)

The beginning of my portrait photography

I look back on my childhood, filled with the magic of that simple camera, and can’t help but be grateful.  It was my start – it gave me my passion.  And now here I am, 30+ years later, still embracing cameras and their magic.  I don’t shoot film any more (tempted to find myself a film camera again), but I love my Canon digital SLR as much as I loved that old Kodak…

The camera that started it all…

I’m curious to hear from you.  Was there something from your own childhood that was as magical to you as this camera was for me?  Tell me about it below.  I’d love to know what set off your own passion!

Until next time,
